Planning Your Website
The following questions are designed to help you think about what you want out of your site. Your answers will also help your web designer produce a site that works for you.
- What is your reason for commissioning a new website?
- What are your business objectives for the website? For example, attract new customers, improve sales, create a better perception of your company.
- How will you know if your site is a success? For example, 30% increase in customers. 10% increase in sales, 40% less time spent on training.
- Do you have a deadline and if so, what is the reason for your deadline?
- If you have an existing website, what do you like and dislike about this site and why?
- Do you have an existing brand / logo / colour scheme that your new site needs compliment?
- What categories and/or pages do you need?
- Do you need special features such as a contact form, an email newsletter, a guestbook, forums, online shopping, online booking, a member area, a calendar, music, video or a gallery?
- Which words reflect the image you would like to portray, e.g. professional, modern, traditional, friendly, quirky, fun, innovative, funky, retro, calm, glamorous, clean, bright, conservative, minimalist, colourful, natural, elegant, bold, exciting?
- Which websites do you like and why do you like them? See Sites for Design Inspiration for ideas
- What sort of visitors are you trying to attract? Think about age range, gender, location, technical experience, disposable income, motivation, time available, education and culture.
- What will people do on your site?
- Who are your competitors? What do you like and dislike about their sites? Why will people choose your site over your competitors?
- What search terms will people use to find your site? Try to list about 20 in order of priority.
