Planning a Website
Do you need a Content Management System?
A content management system (CMS) enables you to update your website without any knowledge of coding. You can use a CMS to change your website text, upload photos, add news articles, write blog posts, change menus and update prices. This article is about whether you need a CMS. If you want to know more about what a CMS is, you can read about them here.
Reasons to Have a CMS
- A CMS enables you to upload new pages, articles, stories and images without relying on a web designer.
- If you plan to change your content or add new content frequently, learning to use a CMS can save you money.
- Most content management systems can be accessed online so you can update your site from any computer that has an internet connection. There's no need to install special software.
- Several people can update the site. One of our clients has a magazine site that is updated by journalists in London, New York and Amsterdam.
Potential Pitfalls
- Can you spare the time? A company blog might sound like a great idea but to keep visitors coming back, it should be updated regularly. A blog where the most recent post is 2007 can create a worse perception than no blog at all. Be realistic.
- Are you technically confident? As with any computer technology, content management systems take time to learn.
- Does it make economic sense? Say you're an accountant and your hourly rate is £50.00. If you spend three hours updating your site, that's £150.00 of your time. If your web company could have made those changes for you in an hour, it would have made more sense to outsource the work.
Setting up a content management system usually involves a higher initial outlay than a standard website. If you're still undecided, we're always happy to have a free, friendly, no-pressure chat to discuss the best solution for you.
